We opened in 2008 and to be honest i didnt really know if we would still be around in a year. The day before our official opening on May 14th i decided to open up for the afternoon as a test run....and guess what...nobody came in !!
As you can imagine I didnt sleep much that night and already began thinking of what i should do instead if my dream of opening a deli falls flat on its feet.
Much to my relief, the next day, was very busy, and from then on sesami grew and grew and we have never looked back since.
It’s a strange feeling when you are lucky enough to get to live your life’s dream, i sometimes think that someone else has thought up sesami and i am just working there in my favourite place! Its an amazing sensation to be able to share all the things i love and to be able to introduce people to the delicious foods that i have grown up with.
sesami is a mixture of Cypriot, Greek, Turkish, Middle-Eastern and Italian too, plus anything else that takes my fancy and we are constantly sourcing new foods from some talented local cooks.
I always found delicatessens a bit intimidating when you go inside, especially if you need to ask about anything you want to try, but i intentionally set out from the beginning to make sesami approachable and down to earth. Food is food, its amazing, uncomplicated and simple and I still get a kick out of seeing our customers eating something they have never tasted before and seeing the joy on their faces!!

when sesami first opened we never imagined how popular our dips would become. Initially we began making our own humous which became an instant hit then we made our classic roasted aubergine dip, then the red pepper and feta dip soon followed.
We make small batches at a time so they are fresh and we can barely keep up with the demand !!
You will also find other dips such as our fiery harissa, taramasalata and red and green pestos.

The Sesame seed is considered to be the oldest oilseed crop known to humanity. Sesame has many species, and most are wild. Most wild species of the genus Sesamum are native to sub-saharan Africa. Sesame Indicum the cultivated type, originated in India.
Charred remains of sesame recovered from archeological excavations have been dated to 3500-3050 BC. Trading of Sesame between Mesopotamia and regions that are now Pakistan and India occurred by 2000 BC. Some reports claim Sesame was cultivated in Egypt during the Ptolemiac period.
Records from Babylon and Assyria, dating about 4000 years ago mention sesame. Egyptians called it sesemt, and it is included in the list of medicinal drugs in the scrolls of the Ebers Papyrus dated to be over 3600 years old. Archeological reports from Turkey indicate that Sesame was grown and pressed to extract oil at least 2750 years ago in the empire of Urartu.
The historic origins of Sesame was favored by its ability to grow in areas that will not support the growth of other crops; it is also a robust crop that needs little farmer support - it grows in drought conditions in high heat, with residual moisture in soil after monsoons are gone or even when rains fail or when rains are excessive.
It was a crop that could be grown by subsistence farmers at the edge of deserts, where no crops grow.
